Finally, another home project has been completed at my house. I actually try to complete a major project each year. This year it is new flooring in my kitchen/dining room. It also includes a wash room and powder room. This was not a project of my choosing however. A few months ago, we had a dishwasher leak that made this project a necessity.
The good news is that my homeowners insurance paid for this new floor. When I originally built the house (1992) we laid vinyl on the flooring because I had serious budget constraints. Vinyl was the cheapest flooring available.
A few years ago, I laid “Pergo” flooring over the vinyl. It looked pretty but this product absolutely SUCKED! I despise Pergo. It does not feel right under your feet. It looks like wood but is very spongy. If you spill water on it, it soaks up water like a sponge. Do not use Pergo, you will be very disappointed. When my dishwasher leaked, the Pergo was destroyed. There is a great chance that with regular wood flooring, I could have just mopped up the water.
I decided this time to go with pre-finished wood flooring from Lowe’s Home Improvement. I used Lowe’s from start to finish. I have to say I was a bit skeptical at first but I am extremely happy with the results. I had a few people warn me about using Lowe’s for the installation. I have used Lowe’s before and my results were very good. Lowe’s guarantees their work and I have to be 100% satisfied. I paid $35 for the original estimate from Lowes. Installers came out to quote the project. The same installers that quoted, did the work.
Prefinished Wood Floor Project Detail:
Removal of all Pergo flooring
458 square feet to be installed
Roofing felt moisture barrier laid
Pre-painted (white) quarter round floor molding
Reset toilet and new wax ring
Cut door jambs
etc. etc. etc.
Project Cost:
$3823.40 (Turn key. Labor & materials.)
It took 2 men 2.5 days to complete the project and they worked around 20 hours total to complete the installation.
All of the photos were taken with my trusty iPhone. I can definitely recommend Lowe’s for your next project. I have used them twice now and i’ve been very happy with the results.

Looks great man, I love hardwood floors. My old house had awesome oak hardwood floors throughout the main floor and I would get that again in a heart beat.
Thanks Josh. My floors look so good now that I could just kick myself for waiting this long.
