I want to share another idea with you to market your hyperlocal blog. If you have been reading Bloggerlens you will know that this is a blog about ideas. I’m not laying claim that all of my ideas work but I’m willing to try and find out. Some of the things I do on my hyperlocal blog may not work on yours. I subscribe to the thought that no idea is stupid until you figure out it doesn’t work.
Actually, I think you could use this idea to market any blog but for example sake, let’s talk hyperlocal and what we can do with it. I stumbled across a blog article a few weeks ago that did a post about an RSS Footer Widget to add to your wordpress blog. DazzlinDonna.com. The idea struck me as simple and could be very effective if you approached it in different ways. Donna Fontenot posted this article and video about 2 places to brand yourself that you might not have thought about, and some unlikely places to do it. The video was produced by Dave Dugdale who is also known as Solar Dave. It was a little strange that the article did not include a link to the RSS Footer Widget and I had to track it down myself. For your convenience, here is the link. RSS Footer Widget.
Check out the video first and I’ll share my ideas with you.
I think the idea is simple and could be very effective from a branding perspective and also an advertising perspective. I set the widget up on MonroeScoop.com and also here on Bloggerlens.com. The setup is very easy. After you add the RSS Footer Widget to your blog, it will appear under your settings panel.

Under the options panel, you can see that you are given a box for content and you are allowed HTML. This option opens up a world of possibilities for you. For my branding on this blog, I include a picture of my ugly mug and remarks. There is an option to link back to the original article also.

When anyone who subscribes to this blog by RSS, here is how it looks at the bottom of the article.

This is where you should let your ideas run wild. On my hyperlocal blog, I have around 60 RSS Subscribers at this point. I know that’s not a lot so far but my blog is new and growing. Right now, I’m using my own image and basically thanking my readers for being a subscriber. When my readership hits 100, I plan on using this feature to sell advertising. I could easily offer an advertiser an opportunity to sponsor my e-mail subscriber list for a period of time. Maybe offer a week for $100. Every article I publish that week will be delivered to inboxes the next morning with all of the branding for my advertiser including links back to his site. Even $50 per week sponsorship could net me $200 of income in a month for almost no effort on my part. Maybe you want to put an Amazon link in the footer or a link to your e-book.
Here is an example I made of how you might use the RSS Footer to sell advertising on your hyperlocal blog. I made this up of course, but you get the idea.

The possibilities are endless and I feel that this is very unobtrusive and could be very effective advertising. Once again, this is an idea right now and I’m looking forward to implementing this on my hyperlocal blog. I would enjoy hearing your ideas also and if you are already using this widget, please share your methods.

This sounds like a great way to get some extra cash flow with the widget. Not only for local but for other areas as well.
Cool idea!

@Denise. Thanks. It’s an idea that I’m planning on putting to use soon. I’ll report my progress.
